The following behaviors can all be important signs of distress.
TROUBLING BEHAVIORS
鈥 Noticeable changes in energy, hygiene, or appearance
鈥 Frequent absences or disengagement from class and activities
鈥 Emotional instability: outbursts, crying, or expressions of hopelessness
鈥 Visible signs of self-harm or substance use
鈥 Direct statements about personal distress, family issues, or suicidal thoughts
DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIORS
鈥 Interfering with learning or university operations
鈥 Verbally abusive, bullying, or intimidating conduct
鈥 Extreme irritability or impulsiveness
鈥 Demanding or irrational behavior
NOTE ON ACADEMIC CONCERNS:
If a student is experiencing strictly academic difficulties, such as low grades, quiz/exam performance, or brief lapses in attendance, without related concerns as described above, please refer the student first to their academic advisor.
